Gaucín Christmas Card Trip
Written by Geoff Forster
A trip to our neighbouring metropolis to post Christmas cards.
It's the first day of December.
Bright and sunny, but the air temperature has dropped in the last two weeks and you definitely need trousers and a fleece.
We parked near the bus stop.
This is Cortes de la Frontera, taken from Gaucín.
The road bridge behind Gaucín.

Down to the post office. Where we were ripped off. It used to be around 50/60 centimos for a stamp to England. Now you can't buy stamps and the hombre weighs your mail and hand stamps letters. We were charged over a 1€ per card. It would be cheaper to get a flight to England and hand deliver them. Bloody Christmas.
Okay closer to the date I will be trying to be more festive ... it is an effort, if it wasn't for the food, drink and presents ...
I know Christmas is for kids, perhaps we could borrow one forten five minutes?
I remember photographing this small street in 2004. It still looks the same. Lots of beautiful flowers.
From 2004 ...
A typical street.
We called in to see Manolo.
Refreshed we walked up towards the castle.

A few Jane took of me.

A popular gift this Christmas ... a life size "Miserable Bastard" gnome ornament for your garden? Order now to avoid disappointment.
The view south to Gibraltar and Africa.

El Hacho mountain and the church. For years the cross on the top looked as if it was about to fall and (like in the Omen) kill someone. The roof now looks in better order.
The church used to have a pair of beautiful trees outside. I think they were Jacarandas? Now there are two orange trees. Not sure what happened to the original trees.
From 2004 ...
A new thing in Gaucín this year are multi-coloured Geckos on house fronts. Some are large some are small. I think it is supposed to encourage people to walk the village following a route to spot the Geckos. Some are good ... others are a little garish, it's not original and a bit cheesy. We have to admit that we do like this one near La Casita.
A lovely December morning.
We saw more Brits than Spanish.
All the Spanish spoke to us ...

I’d like one of those miserable bastard gnomes, but Chris says we’ve already got one, it’s me.
I have just been surfing around and was glad to see the blog back! Its an age since I stayed in your apartment with my other half and Justin and Katy for a few days one easter when our house wasn’t quite ready, (possibly 2006). We get out to La Estacion de Benaojan about six times a year and have really settled into the village, although major change is underfoot with the AVE upgrade to the railway line. Also in Ronda there is a new Aldi store on the industial estate which will be opening on some Sundays apparently. Convenient – yes. Do I like the idea – no! Am arriving in the village for a few days next week – can’t wait!
Thanks so much for the photos of Gaucin – it looks a lovely day! We won’t be there until January, and I am really missing it all …….
Hope you and Jane have a great Christmas.
