Montejaque
Written by Geoff Forster
Montejaque: We visited Montejaque one day in July. We had passed by on the way to Grazalema. We planned a prompt return as Montejaque is so beautifully set in the rocky crags and outcrops of the Sierra de Libar.
We parked the car on the main road into town. It seemed quite a busy place. We started walking up into town.
The photograph below is looking back down the road.
This little crucifix was in a niche on the side of a house at the bottom of the pueblo.
This street had some lovely townhouses.
Montejaque is becoming very popular with many British buying property in the last few years.
We found this unusual view with three corners having been contoured to suggest an archway.
We turned a corner and got a glimpse of a pretty palm tree lined plaza.
We decided to explore the plaza area later and headed up a narrow street.
The houses were getting more interesting the further we climbed. We love the old rustic houses with pot tiles, sun bleached doors and flaking white (lime) washed walls.
The next photograph shows how small the Spanish people were a generation or two ago.
This next house was amazing. Possibly the most 'rustic' house we've found so far!
Unfortunately the street was so narrow I couldn't get far enough back to get a good angle.
There were lumps of rock smoothed over centuries into steps. Boulders across the street just built into the road. The paintwork, door and roof were fantastic.
These old houses are lovely to stand and stare at, but you wouldn't want to live in them, they are too far gone. So I feel a little hypocritical about not wanting some Brit to come along and knock it down so they can build a lovely new townhouse on the plot.
Come and see these pueblos now while this sort of house is still there to stare at !
Here's Jane near the top of the pueblo. This old part of town was worth the climb. Some of these streets must be very dangerous when wet.
The photograph below is from the same street looking up.
If you were wondering where the Church, Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and plaza were. Here are two photos of the church tower.
Here's the Ayuntamiento in the Plaza.
The plaza was spacious, there were some palms by the church and lot of orange trees around the edge.
This old plaque which was on the wall above a large stone fountain, says "You will be fined 1 peseta for having a bath"
We liked Montejaque it has a lovely setting in the limestone outcrops of the Sierra de Libar. The old town is wonderful, the streets are incredible.
Definitely a place to visit.
House hunters may have missed the first wave as lots of people have been buying here, but it is a lovely lovely place and will always be popular so prices may continue to rise.
Please don't renovate/knock down my favourite casa!
