Cortes de la Frontera

Written by Geoff Forster

Cortes de la Frontera: Cortes de la Frontera is one of the larger pueblos in the area, it always seems to be a busy place.
This is due to the fact it is very much built along one street. A very long street, I would guess it is over 500 metres long. So all traffic, both human and motorised, uses what in places is a narrow pretty Spanish street with palms, orange trees, a popular drinking fountain, a lovely church and a bullring. Photo Property-in-the-sun.com It was a beautiful, hot and haze free day when we took these photographs. This one above is taken from outside the bullring down to the church. The one below is from outside the church up to the bullring. The beautiful Sierra de Libar mountains run behind Cortes they are part of the Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema. cortes We have always liked Cortes de la Frontera. We drove along the valley from Ronda in January 2004 with our Estate Agent who is based in Cortes. It was our first stop in this area on a house hunting search that took us from Almeria to Ronda via the Alpujarras. We eventually fell in love with Benarrabá, but for a while Cortes de La Frontera and Estación de Cortes de la Frontera were strong contenders.
It is not unusual to hear British voices in Cortes and Estación de Cortes. cortes This is probably the busiest part of Cortes de la Frontera! This was taken during Siesta. Of course the main street does have side streets and there are a number of busy shopping areas and a small indoor market. There are also a number of good bars/Cafés. A pretty good supermarket at the far end of town sells tea bags to the Brit's.
Cortes is an up and coming town with a number of urbanisation developments being built/planned or completed in the last few years, these are mainly for Spanish families but there are British families living on these estates. We looked at a couple of them and they are finished to a high quality inside. cortes cortes The Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) is in the Plaza de Carlos III it is a very impressive Town Hall. The entrance is to the left, opposite the House of culture. There was a classical concert on in the church the evening we were here but it started at 9pm and we couldn't wait. cortes ayuntamiento Here's Jane she loves bougainvillea, this bush is on the right of the Ayuntamiento. It is a pretty sight. cortes Here are a couple of the many tiled plaques that are in most of the pueblos in the area. cortes wall tile1 cortes wall tile Here is a view of Cortes de la Frontera from across the valley. We enjoy our regular trips to Cortes de la Frontera. As you can see Cortes de la Frontera is built along a flat ridge below the craggy outcrops of the Sierra de Libar. A very beautiful setting. cortes frontera
