Osuna
Written by Geoff Forster
Osuna: It was late August when we visited Osuna. It was a place I'd long wanted to look around after reading Alistair Boyd's book "Sierra's of the South". He rated Osuna highly.
We set out early in the morning, drove through Ronda to Campillos. The area around Campillos has a lot of large pig farms and they were ripe in the August heat. (House hunters take note!) We went to Teba and then onto Fuente del Piedro to see the Flamingoes. We then took the Seville motorway and headed to Osuna. We parked the car with little difficulty not that far from the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and quite close to the town centre. This was a surprising bonus. Parking in Spain is not always this easy!
Down a side street we noticed this magnificent Palace.
El Palicio de los Cepida, it now serves as Osuna's courtrooms.
The facade is beautiful. We did look inside but were asked by a guard who seemed to take his job very seriously not to photograph.
We walked round the corner and found a pretty plaza.
It was incredibly hot. Osuna and the surrounding farmlands from which Osuna generates a substantial income are known as the frying pan of Andalucía. It was the hottest we'd experienced in Spain around 40C in the shade!! We had an ice cold Coke in a bar. There was a church/convent at one side of the plaza. This lovely tiled plaque was on the wall outside.
We walked around the town and were very impressed by the architecture. There are a lot of churches in Osuna.
The following photographs show some of these lovely buildings and the streets of Osuna.
We walked through this arch and looked at a lovely ceramic tile shop.
We turned back and headed back towards the plaza.
It was so hot, It was just after 1pm and the temperature was amazing even in the shade! Jane was feeling the heat and was getting a headache so we stopped for another Coke.
We bought some cheese, chorizo sausage and some bread to make sandwiches and headed back to the car. This is a view of the Osuna skyline.
It took about ten minutes to find our way out of Osuna and back to the motorway.
We headed to the strangely named Moron de la Frontera. We stopped just past Moron at the side of the road to make our sandwiches and drink some fruit juice. It was around 2:30 pm there was no shade. If we'd bought eggs we could have fried them! The journey back was interesting we past a black bull farm and a donkey/mule farm.
A long hot day but well worth it. Thanks to Jane for all the driving.
