San Luis de Sabinillas

Written by Geoff Forster

San Luis De Sabinillas:
This is the closest resort to the self catering apartment we have to let in the wonderful mountain pueblo of Benarrabá.
Sabinillas is also our favourite beach as it is very long, quite wide and never really busy.
It is a pleasant 30 minute drive down from Gaucín past Casares, through part of Manilva (there is a by-pass but it is not open yet) and down to Sabinillas. This is the small modern church.
Sabinillas doesn't have many old buildings (a few flat roofed front line buildings remain to be turned into 'edificios', if there was a Spanish village here before the tourism boom expansion which has spread down the Spanish coastline it has almost disappeared completely, unlike some of the other resorts like Estepona. sabinillas church fountain
Our neighbours Carmen and Cristóbal brought us to Sabinillas one hot Sunday in June 2004. We liked the beach and thought that Sabinillas was a very Spanish Resort. There aren't any hotels full of package holiday makers. Most of the people on the beach were Spanish, except for a very loud American family.
We have since been to Sabinillas a number of times and found more and more British here. The customers in the street Cafés are split with the Spanish customers inside and the foreigners in the sun outside.
There are a number of British run pubs, one with Sky TV showing the football. (British run pubs usually charge more for their beer and food than Spanish run bars).
The N340 coast road runs past Sabinillas, it splits the town into the coastal area on one side and a line of shops, mainly furniture shops on the other, there is an English bookshop here. Behind the shops is an estate of recently built town houses with strange round castle stairwells.
There are a lot of apartment blocks being constructed here as there are all along the Costa del Sol.
There are also a lot of Estate Agents. As there are all along the Costa del Sol.

Of course the main reasons to come to San Luis de Sabinillas are the long, wide, clean beach and the Mediterranean sea.

There is a paved promenade along the top of the beach. This has a number of street bars and Cafés.

There are a few amenities on the beach including this beach volleyball net.

At one end of the beach there is an area being developed called Duquesa. There is a marina, golf course and a lot of very up market housing. It is being promoted as a rival to Puerto Banus's Millionaires Mile ...

The beach curves around near the marina. This was taken from the Marina wall. Looking across the bay to the main beach of Sabinillas.
The mountains in the background are the Sierra Bermeja. The apartment in Benarrabá which we have to rent is in a beautiful white village on the other side of the range.

There are a few small inshore fishing boats on the beach. We watched one land its catch.

The old boy is carrying an octopus, this is very popular in Spain.

This is a larger octopus. A cleverly designed beach shower.

This next photograph was taken in December! It was certainly hot enough to get a tan as these holidaymaker's were doing.

The bay sweeps round to Estepona.
We walked for more than an hour round towards Estepona paddling in the edge of the Med. You have to go inland a few yards for the odd rocky outcrop but you could walk all the way up the coast if you wanted.

San Luis de Sabinillas is great place if you just like relaxing or walking on the beach. It is never overcrowded in fact it is usually very quiet.
If you would like to visit shops then it is not the best place to come. Estepona and Marbella are better options but for a day out on the beach this is our favourite place .. so far.
