Setenil de las Bodegas
Written by Geoff Forster
Setenil de las Bodegas: We set off from Benarrabá one beautiful June morning to visit Setenil de las Bodegas.
We traveled along the A369 to Ronda.
We then went around the south of Ronda on the bypass and took the Campillos road.
After around one hundred metres we took a left turn and headed toward Arriate.
We drove on through and La Cimada and Los Prados (a pueblo strung out along both sides of the road) until we reached Setenil de las Bodegas.
It was Friday and Setenil's market was on. We looked in vain for a parking space, but ended up driving down, over the bridge, then up the other side of the gorge that splits Setenil in half. We parked at the top and walked down.
Looking down we got a wonderful view of the pueblo.
Looking across the gorge to the church.
The magnificent old church in Setenil de las Bodegas.
We walked down the steep hill towards the bottom of the gorge and the market.
The bridge across the gorge (left) and the dry river bed full of bushes and trees (bottom).
Setenil market.
The gorge has been eroded at the base. Houses and bars have been built at the base using the rock as a roof and back wall.
The roof!
It is very dramatic and well worth coming here to see.

The river must be deep and fast flowing to cause this erosion. It is quite wide and has high walls. It must be quite a sight after heavy rains.
Looking up the gorge from a small bridge.
The owner of this house must enjoy watching TV!
This tile plaque was in the foyer of a building, it shows various scenes of Setenil de las Bodegas.
We walked back up the very steep hill to the car.
I took this photograph of the church from the road out of Setenil.
We really enjoyed our visit to Setenil de las Bodegas.
Timing it for the Friday market was a bonus.
It is very steep, but worth the climb for the views across the pueblo and the gorge is fantastic.
Setenil de las Bodegas is well worth a visit.
Another of my favourite villages I have been visiting several times. If not the most beautiful village (although not bad at all) – definetely one of the most special and different with the rock serving as a roof to houses as well as to the streets!
NB there are several good restaurants to have a good meal in this village!
